Marshmallow Gun's Top 10 Songs of 2012 - Dubstep
Dubstep has to be one of my favorite genres of all time. The variety that can be created through Dubstep is just overwhelming. There a lot of tracks that are great and unforunately I won't be able to cover them all. These 10 tracks that I picked are one of my favorites of the year. Each is just perfect in its own way. From Zeds Dead to Kill The Noise. Although most of these tracks are mainstream, they deserve the spotlight because they have been produced almost to perfection. Virtual Riot and The Frim on the other hand are upcoming and contenders in the Dubstep game. So here it is, my top 10 Dubsteps track of 2012. You are in for a ride and I guarantee you, you won't be disappointed!
**Note there are a lot of tracks that I could have/could have not listen to. This is merely my opinion as these are the tracks that stuck out to me. Also I decided not list which is 1 to 10 as I feel like each song has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Zeds Dead - Adrenaline [January 23, 2012]
Zeds Dead baby. They are by far one of my favorite Dubstep artist. They know how to throw on a set. I saw them this past New Years and I was just amazed by Zeds Dead. I've seen them over 4 times since I've been going to events, my first being at Winterfresh 2010 while they were still unknown. I seen them progress further into the spotlight and now they are just amazing. This song solidified there spot in the Dubstep Hall of Fame. I love this song because of the rising synth, the vocals, and also the dark atmosphere feel it delivers.
Aura Dione - In Love With The World (Virtual Riot Remix) [September 28, 2012]
I consider this a sleeper hit. Virtual Riot is one of those artists that can make it big. Too bad he hasn't gotten much attention in the EDM scene. I am excited for 2013 because I feel like he can make an impact with his style. He adopted a Alvin Risk, Skrillex style with his own and I'm impressed. This song in particular shines in every way. The way that this remix is composed is just amazing and jaw dropping. This song should have more hits than it does at this moment. So take the time and listen to this track. You won't regret it. Trust me.
Kill The Noise - Jokes On You (Kill The Noise Remix) [July 24, 2012]
Who can remix their own song? Kill The Noise, thats who. The preview is only about 1 minute long but thats all you need. You'll be blown away by this remix because its completely different from the original. This Dubstep style is one of my favorites of all time. This guys knows how to make great music! I saw him open for Knife Party and he was just as amazing live. This song though, the synth that he uses is fantastic. Along with the "What" samples, its pure genius!
Datsik Ft. Snak The Ripper - Fully Blown (The Frim Remix) [September 10, 2012]
Can you believe that this track is for free? I couldn't believe it either. This song won Datsik's remix competition of Fully Blown. After listening I know why. The way that The Frim put together his synths and samples are just awesome. His Dubstep style is something refreshing I think because I haven't heard this style as much. Also when it incorporates Drumstep into this track, it feels completely different even though it uses the same synths and sample! This guy is just that awesome.
501 - Feel For You [November 12, 2012]
501 is one of those artists you can just love all the time. This original Feel For You, is just amazing. The breakdown to the build is something different from most Dubstep songs. The breakdown has a House style which leads into a synth that I like a lot. Its a synth that isn't dark or dirty but it hits the spot perfectly. Such a nice and uplifting synth which could get girls grinding! I love the way that this song is composed which is why he deserves a spot on the top 10.
Eptic - Deathray [March 12, 2012]
Ah Eptic. Take out the t and you get epic, which is what this guy is. I've been a fan of his music for a little over a year and every song he touches turn into gold. I heard this song live at a Circus Records show in Los Angeles and everyone went so fucking crazy when it dropped. The way that this song is composed is meant for people to go wild. I am in love with his style and I cannot wait to hear more tracks from Eptic. The samples that he include just adds more to the song. It literally sounds like a Deathray. The synth reminds me of some funky lazer which turns people into dust.
Rusko - Opium [March 26, 2012]
I heard this track at Rusko's show back in Los Angeles at the Palladium. Definitely one of the sickest song I've heard in a while. His style of music is top notch and different from anything I heard. This is the only guy that can pull off animal samples in a song. Hell he should only be the only guy to do that. I mean a fucking cougar noise in a Dubstep song, Thats something unheard of. This song sounds so funky, its quite insane that this is a Dubstep song. Like I said, its different from a typical Dubstep song which I'm okay with. The wobbles in this song are to die for and its awesome that all his music is now free to download from this point on.
Dada Life - Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker (Datsik Remix) [July 2, 2012]
Datsik is the father of Industrial Dubstep. Thats the type of Dubstep that is heard in most Dubstep songs. The robot sounding synths that everyone is in love with, hes the guy who created (you can correct me if I'm wrong). He takes an already great song and puts a Dubstep flavor and creates a different track. Its a fantastic track overall and I'm excited to see what Datsik has in stored for 2013. I know it'll be a memorable year for him!
Muffler & Bare - Megatronik (Ajapai Remix) [May 23, 2012]
Ajapai is one of those artists that make one of the badest, dirtiest, darkest sounds I've ever heard. This guy sure knows how to make that dirty Dubstep. This remix he did for Muffler and Bare shows you what I mean. Its so great though. I'm sure if he played this track at a show, he would get nothing but head bobbers and moshers! This track overall is dark as Dubstep could get but at the same time...perfection.
Adventure Club Ft Kai - Need Your Heart [June 22, 2012]
Canada will always be the home of Dubstep music. The latest and greatest Dubstep will always come from Canada. Zeds Dead, Adventure Club, Datsik, Downlink, and everyone else are from Canada. Adventure Club joined the list because they are just as amazing. This free track they did for their fans is just great. The vocals in the track fit amazingly well with the synths that they provided. This is such a good song.
Honorable Mentions
Dyro & Ansol - Top of the World (Dyro Dubstep Rework) [November 16, 2012]
Dyro has been known for his Progressive and Electro House music. He has created many hits and this time he tries something different. He takes one of his popular songs Top of the World and gives it a Dubstep tweak. I don't understand why people dislike this track because its not him but I fucking love it. Its different and it has this Electro House/Dubstep style to it. Its a true banger which will get any crowd crazy! Enjoy this track!
